Season overview
Spring (March–May)
Waterfalls are at full power, rivers run fast for rafting and the valleys turn green. Fewer tourists and lower prices, especially in March and April. The Vršič Pass typically reopens late May. Excellent for hiking from mid-May.
Summer (June–August) Peak season
The best weather, all attractions open, and the most outdoor activities available. July and August are extremely busy at Lake Bled and Ljubljana — book early. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains. June and early September offer a sweet spot of good weather with manageable crowds.
Autumn (September–October)
Golden autumn light, wine harvest in Brda and Vipava, and spectacular foliage in Triglav National Park and Logar Valley. One of the most beautiful times to visit. Temperatures remain comfortable until mid-October.
Winter (November–February)
Ski season at Kranjska Gora, Vogel and Krvavec. Ljubljana hosts one of Europe's most acclaimed Christmas markets (late November–January). Many mountain attractions close, but the caves, cities and ski resorts thrive. Lowest prices outside the Christmas/New Year period.
Key seasonal closures to know
- Vintgar Gorge — open approximately May to late October/November. Closed in winter.
- Vršič Pass (road) — typically closed November to late May due to snow. One of the most scenic drives in Slovenia, it connects Kranjska Gora with the Soča Valley.
- Ski resorts — Vogel (Bohinj) and Kranjska Gora typically open December–March/April, snow permitting. Krvavec, near Ljubljana, often has the best snowpack.
- Mountain huts (koče) — most open late June to mid-October. Essential to book ahead in July–August for Triglav routes.
- Postojna and Škocjan caves — open year-round; caves maintain ~10°C, making them a good rainy-day option in any season.
